Kuala Lumpur: The success of individuals, companies, and nations in the future could be measured by how effectively they deploy and use artificial intelligence (AI), said Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz. He emphasized that AI has evolved beyond being a mere technological tool to become a significant enabler of economic competitiveness, national resilience, and geopolitical influence.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Tengku Zafrul expressed that AI has already changed various aspects of life and work, disrupting traditional methods of operation and interaction. He acknowledged the concerns surrounding AI, including its potential to exacerbate polarization, xenophobia, racism, and even conflict. These remarks were made during the fireside chat session titled ‘The Intelligence Grid: Building Bridges Through Sovereign AI Collaboration.’
During the session, Tengku Zafrul served as the moderator, engaging with three prominent speakers: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, Vietnam Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh, and G42 group chief executive officer Peng Xiao. G42 is a technology holding company based in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, focusing on AI and cloud computing.
Tengku Zafrul highlighted the importance of moving away from binary rivalries and exploring an alternative path, particularly for middle powers such as those in ASEAN and the Gulf. He advocated for a new model of sovereign AI collaboration that balances sovereign interests with shared development, mutual trust, and inclusive progress. The session aimed to address these complex issues with insights from both political leaders and a global corporate executive.
