Floods Force Elderly Woman to Evacuate Three Times in a Month

Kuala terengganu: An elderly woman was forced to evacuate to a temporary relief centre (PPS) three times within a month after her home was repeatedly inundated by floods.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Fatimah Mahmud, 74, from Kampung Pak Tijah, reported her first evacuation at the end of November when floodwaters rose to knee level in her house. Living with her grandson, she recounted the second evacuation on December 14, followed by a third at about 3 pm yesterday when water levels rapidly surged to waist height due to continuous heavy rain.

Speaking to reporters from Sekolah Kebangsaan Tok Jembal PPS, she described how the water began rising as early as 7 am yesterday. This prompted her grandson, who works as a security guard, to relocate household items, including a refrigerator and washing machine, to a higher area as the kitchen was already badly flooded.

Fatimah, who suffers from asthma, mentioned that she faces evacuation almost annually as her village is prone to flooding. Despite exhaustion, she continues to assist her grandson with cleaning efforts, hoping to return home soon.

Meanwhile, Ahmad Hazlan Abdullah, 50, who has a heart condition, shared that he was evacuated twice to the same PPS this year. He sought assistance from the Fire and Rescue Department due to safety concerns as floodwaters rose swiftly during the third wave.

The State Disaster Management Committee Secretariat reported that a total of 468 victims from affected families had been evacuated to four PPS in three districts in Terengganu due to the third wave of flooding as of noon today.
