Flood Relief Centres in Penampang Closed as Waters Recede

Penampang:All four temporary relief centres in the Penampang district were closed after floodwaters in the affected areas fully receded by 8 pm.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the Sabah State Disaster Management Committee (JPBN) confirmed that this development allowed all victims at the relief centres to return home safely. No casualties or fatalities were reported during the disaster in the district.

The relief centres closed included the Penampang Sports Complex, Dewan Huguan Siou, Sekolah Kebangsaan St Paul Kolopis, and St Michael Parish Hall. These centres had sheltered a total of 118 victims from 41 families after they were evacuated due to the flood.

The Penampang District Disaster Management Committee (JPBD) chairman, Noemi Dyena John Tren, declared a disaster at 10.40 pm the previous night, which led to the opening of the relief centres following continuous heavy rain. The water level of Sungai Moyog had exceeded the danger mark of 9.12 metres, affecting 15 villages and flooding 12 roads in the district.

Meanwhile, one relief centre in the Kota Kinabalu district, Dewan Masyarakat Manggatal, remains open and is still registering victims as of tonight.
