RM98 Million Road Projects Announced to Alleviate Sarikei Traffic

Sarikei:The Sarawak state government is set to carry out two road projects valued at RM98 million, aiming to reduce traffic congestion and enhance connectivity and economic activities in Sarikei.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Sarikei Member of Parliament Datuk Seri Huang Tiong Sii announced that the projects include upgrading the Nyelong By-Pass to a four-lane, two-way road at a cost of RM86 million and constructing a new Nyelong By-Pass/Kwong Ming Minah road for RM12 million.

The 3.6-kilometre upgrading project will transform the current two-lane single carriageway into a four-lane dual carriageway. The Sarawak Ministry of Infrastructure and Port Development (MIPD) is overseeing the project, with the Public Works Department (JKR) serving as the implementing agency.

Huang emphasized the importance of these projects in alleviating congestion, enhancing road safety, easing traffic flow, and reducing travel time during his speech at the groundbreaking ceremony.

Additionally, Huang, who also serves as the Deputy Plantation and Commodities Minister, noted that the two-kilometre Nyelong By-Pass/Kwong Ming Minah road will fall under the Rajang Delta Development Agency (RADDA). He highlighted the increasing vehicle numbers on Jalan Repok, with the Nyelong By-Pass emerging as a key alternative for motorists entering and exiting Sarikei town.

This road also functions as a bypass to Tanjung Manis, making the expansion necessary to handle the growing traffic demand.
