Flood Evacuation Numbers Shift in Malaysian States Amid Ongoing Heavy Rains

Kuala lumpur: The situation in flood-affected regions of Malaysia has seen mixed developments, with a decrease in evacuees in Terengganu, an increase in Pahang, and the onset of flooding in Johor due to persistent heavy rainfall.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the State Disaster Management Committee (JPBN) in Sarawak reported that the last two evacuees at a relief center in Miri have returned home. Currently, the center is accommodating four individuals from a family affected by a landslide. In Terengganu, the number of flood evacuees decreased significantly, with 108 individuals from 30 families remaining at relief centers as of 9 am. This is a drop from the previous day's count of 212 evacuees from 58 families.

The Terengganu JPBN Secretariat noted that all evacuees come from the Kemaman district and are being sheltered in six relief centers operational since December 15. These centers include locations such as Kampung Air Putih Community Hall and Kampung Seberang Tayur Hulu Community Hall. The Public Info Banjir website indicated that water levels at two stations in Terengganu have surpassed alert levels, specifically at Sungai Tersat in Kampung Sekayu, Hulu Terengganu, and Sungai Besut at Jambatan Keruak, Besut.

Johor has now become the latest state affected by the floods. JPBN chairman Datuk Asman Shah Abd Rahman stated that a relief center at Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Pusat Air Tawar was opened at 8 am, housing 120 individuals from 31 families from Kampung Baru Air Tawar and Kampung Hubong. He also reported that four rivers in Johor have reached alert levels, including Sungai Muar at Kampung Awat and Sungai Segamat in Segamat.

In contrast, Pahang is experiencing a rise in the number of flood evacuees. As of 8:30 am, 2,077 people from 648 families are being accommodated at 18 centers across three districts. The Social Welfare Department's (JKM) Infobencana application shows that the largest number of evacuees are in Kuantan, with 1,975 individuals from 620 families at 13 centers. The districts of Maran and Rompin follow, with evacuee numbers at 74 and 28, respectively. The Public Info Banjir website has flagged several major rivers in Pahang as having exceeded danger levels.
