Five Siblings Continue a Legacy in Teaching

Sarawak: A family of educators from rural Sarawak reflects the spirit of this year's Teachers' Day theme, Guru Bitara, Nadi Negara, with teaching serving not just as a profession but as a legacy carried on by almost all the siblings. Senior Assistant for Student Affairs at Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Sebako Mohamad Azwan Azahari said his parents, who each served as teachers for more than 30 years, were the main inspiration behind the siblings' interest in education from a young age.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the eldest of five siblings shared that his father is from Kampung Sebako, while his mother is from Kampung Bruit, both villages located on Pulau Bruit in Daro, Sarawak. He has been in the teaching profession for 10 years, currently teaching at his hometown school, while two of his younger siblings are teachers at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Beladin and Sekolah Kebangsaan Bandar Sungai Buaya in Selangor, respectively. Another sibling, who graduated in economics from Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS), also intends to pursue a diploma in education, while the youngest is currently studying at the Teachers Education Institute, Tun Abdul Razak Campus.

Reflecting on his upbringing, Mohamad Azwan recalled how his parents would often bring students home for extra classes, transforming their family quarters into a hub for learning. The blackboard on their wall served as a testament to their dedication. He noted the lasting relationships his parents maintained with former students, attributing much of the family's good fortune to the prayers of these grateful individuals.

The 34-year-old shared insights into the sacrifices made by teachers, emphasizing how they often prioritize their students over their own families. This reality meant that as children of teachers, they only spent significant time with their parents during school holidays, fostering independence from a young age. Mohamad Azwan has come to appreciate the role teachers play in providing emotional support to their students, sometimes becoming a source of comfort and companionship.

Despite facing challenges such as emotional burnout when students do not meet learning targets, Mohamad Azwan remains committed to his profession. He acknowledges the pressures he places on himself and recognizes the importance of adapting his teaching methods to suit the needs and learning styles of his students. His gratitude extends to his former teachers and mentors who have guided him on his journey to becoming an educator.

In his reflections, Mohamad Azwan remarked that while teaching may not bring material wealth, it is enriched by the gratitude and prayers of students. He expressed hope for continued strength and good health to educate the nation's children.
