Kuala lumpur: Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming has issued a final reminder that the community service order for littering offences will come into force on January 1, 2026, as part of stricter enforcement against littering in public places. He declared that enforcement officers have been instructed to uphold the new law, which aims to enhance public cleanliness and civic responsibility. According to BERNAMA News Agency, Nga stated that anyone, including foreigners, who throws rubbish in public places will face a fine of RM2,000 and be sentenced to 12 hours of public cleansing work. This announcement was made via a statement on his Facebook page. Nga has previously emphasized that urban cleanliness is a collective responsibility, not solely the duty of the government or local authorities. He expressed disappointment over the ongoing issue of littering, especially in city centers and public areas. Nga highlighted Malaysia's progress towards becoming a developed nation and the upcoming Visit M alaysia 2026 event. He noted that irresponsible behaviors like littering tarnish the image of Malaysian cities and the country's reputation, even among tourists. He stressed the ministry's commitment, through the Solid Waste and Public Cleansing Management Corporation (SWCorp) and local authorities, to continue cleaning operations and enforcement, but noted the importance of public awareness and cooperation for success. He urged everyone to respect public spaces during festivities or activities by properly disposing of waste and complying with the law to ensure clean, comfortable, and orderly cities. 'Clean cities reflect a cultured society,' Nga said, encouraging support for SWCorp and local authorities' efforts to make Malaysian cities cleaner, sustainable, and livable for future generations.
