Federal Debt Maturity and Growth Trends Highlighted in Auditor General’s Report

Kuala Lampur:The Auditor General's Report (LKAN) 2/2026 has revealed that 39% of Malaysia's federal debt, amounting to RM514.85 billion of the RM1.32 trillion total as of December 31 last year, is set to mature within one to five years.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, The report further outlines that RM313.39 billion, representing 23.7% of the federal debt, will mature within six to ten years, while RM492.52 billion, or 37.3%, is expected to mature in eleven years or more.

Federal debt comprises the outstanding obligations of the Federal Government due to domestic and external borrowings as well as external assistance. This does not include the debts incurred by government agencies or companies owned by the government.

The Auditor General indicated that the overall federal debt increased by RM73.16 billion, or 5.9%, reaching RM1.32 trillion in comparison to RM1.25 trillion in 2024. Despite this increase, the report notes a declining trend in the annual growth rate of federal debt, which was 5.9% last year, down from 10.2% in 2022.
