Kuala lumpur: Former national men’s doubles player Tan Boon Heong has welcomed the appointment of Malaysian badminton legend Datuk Seri Lee Chong Wei as a new Council Member of the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM). He expressed confidence in Chong Wei’s ability to contribute significantly to the progress of national badminton, emphasizing the importance of allowing him the necessary space and freedom to perform his duties effectively.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Tan Boon Heong highlighted the potential impact of Chong Wei’s involvement with BAM, stressing that his presence should not be limited to mere attendance at meetings. He believes that Chong Wei’s insights and understanding of the sport can greatly benefit BAM, provided he is empowered to act independently. Tan stated, “We need to give him the freedom and power to do what he wants because I believe he knows what needs to be done.”
Prior to this, BAM president Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz had announced Chong Wei’s appointment among BAM’s new council members. This marks Chong Wei’s return to the national badminton scene, aligning with BAM’s vision of establishing Malaysia as a badminton powerhouse.
In addition to Chong Wei, Zafrul revealed that BAM has also appointed three prominent corporate figures as Council Members. These include Employees Provident Fund (EPF) Director Tan Sri Gooi Hoe Soon, who will handle finance; former NTV7 Chief Executive Officer Datuk Seri Shazalli Ramly, responsible for branding and media strategy; and lawyer Datuk Sunil Abraham, who will oversee legal matters.
