Cabinet to Address Potential Impact of Trump’s Tariff Proposal on Malaysia

Kuala Lumpur: The Cabinet is set to discuss the implications of a new policy introduced by United States President Donald Trump, which could have economic repercussions for Malaysia due to proposed tariffs on imported goods from several countries. Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan highlighted Malaysia’s significant role as a US trading partner, particularly in exporting electrical and electronic goods.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the new policy announced by Trump suggests that imported goods to the US will face tariffs, potentially impacting Malaysia’s economy due to the planned increase in import tariffs by the US. Mohamad stated that the government is actively monitoring these developments, with Wisma Putra also involved. The latest information will be presented to the Cabinet for discussion.

Recently sworn in as the 47th US President, Trump has outlined a plan to implement a 10 percent tariff on imports from China starting February 1. Additionally, he announced a 25 percent duty on imports from Canada and Mexico, citing concerns over the influx of fentanyl and illegal immigrants into the US.

On a related note, Mohamad conveyed Malaysia’s aspiration for the current ceasefire in Gaza to become permanent, aiming to halt the genocide against Palestinians. He acknowledged the ceasefire efforts facilitated by Qatar, Egypt, and the US, emphasizing Malaysia’s advocacy for an end to the violence. Mohamad also noted the importance of humanitarian aid reaching the region, with significant supplies already delivered since the opening of the Rafah border crossing.

Furthermore, Malaysia is in discussions with Japan to organize a conference with other nations to explore financial support strategies for Gaza’s reconstruction. Initially planned for July, the conference’s schedule might be expedited at the request of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. Mohamad is engaging with his Japanese counterpart to finalize arrangements.
