SMC Honoured in Newsweek’s Asia’s Top Private Hospitals 2025 Rankings

Kuala Lumpur: Sunway Medical Centre, Sunway City: Sunway Medical Centre (SMC) has been celebrated in the inaugural Newsweek’s Asia’s Top Private Hospitals 2025 ranking, marking its commitment to excellence, particularly in orthopaedics and ophthalmology.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, SMC disclosed in a statement today that it has been acknowledged as the leading hospital in Malaysia for four out of five key procedures, which include knee surgery and replacement, shoulder surgery, cataract surgery, and eye refractive surgery. In addition, SMC holds the second position in Asia for cataract surgery and third for refractive eye surgery.

The hospital is also listed among the top 10 in Asia for hip surgery and replacement (sixth), knee surgery and replacement (sixth), and shoulder surgery (10th). Datuk Lau Beng Long, President of Sunway Healthcare Group, expressed gratitude for SMC’s ranking among Asia’s best in specialised fields such as orthopaedics and ophthalmology.

He stated, “It is a testament to our relentless pursuit of clinical excellence. The recognition also underscores the dedication of medical specialists and other healthcare professionals in providing a high standard of multidisciplinary care and treatment to our Malaysian and international patients.”

SMC, as Malaysia’s largest private quaternary hospital, continues to lead in medical innovation and patient care, offering 28 Centres of Excellence supported by a multidisciplinary team that provides personalised treatment within a holistic care framework.

SMC is notably the first hospital in Malaysia to obtain three major hospital-wide accreditations: Joint Commission International (JCI) Accreditation, the Gold Seal of Approval from the United States, the Australian Council on Healthcare Standards (ACHS), and the Malaysian Society for Quality in Health (MSQH).

“Sunway Eye Centre, one of SMC’s Centres of Excellence, offers services across various subspecialties including cataract and refractive ophthalmology, cornea transplant and external eye diseases, medical retinal and uveitis, glaucoma, oculoplastic ophthalmology, vitreoretinal, paediatric ophthalmology and squint. SMC is equipped to treat and manage a wide range of eye diseases, ensuring holistic and optimal care for the patients,” it stated. Recently, the Sunway Eye Centre was honoured as the ZEISS SMILE Ambassador for performing 2,000 SMILE refractive procedures.

In addition, the hospital’s Orthopaedic Centre provides comprehensive primary care and sub-speciality services including trauma care, hip and knee surgery, spine surgery, foot and ankle treatments, hand and microsurgery, paediatric orthopaedics, orthopaedic oncology, and sports surgery.

“Together with the Robotic Surgery and Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS) Centre, SMC has achieved remarkable milestones, including advancements in robotic hip and knee replacement surgeries, which earned recognition in the Malaysia Book of Records. This achievement underscores the centre’s expertise and unwavering commitment to innovation. With a strong focus on advancing technology and improving patient outcomes, the Orthopaedic Centre of Excellence continues to set new benchmarks in the field of orthopaedics,” the statement shared.

In previous years, SMC was also listed among the top 250 hospitals globally in the Newsweek World’s Best Hospitals 2024 rankings, and featured in Newsweek’s Best Specialist Hospitals Asia Pacific list for two consecutive years, 2023 and 2024.
