Kuala lumpur: The Cabinet has given the green light for the phased implementation of the Solid Waste and Public Cleansing Management Act 2007 (Act 672) in Selangor, covering all 12 local authorities in the state, as announced by Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming. This decision marks a significant step towards reforming public cleansing in one of Malaysia's key economic regions.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Minister Nga Kor Ming revealed that a special task force will be established to ensure that Selangor achieves a level of public cleansing that aligns with its status as an economic powerhouse. This initiative is part of the broader efforts under the 13th Malaysia Plan, which aligns with the National Public Cleansing Policy and reflects the MADANI Government's commitment to enhancing public cleansing standards.

The adoption of Act 672 in Selangor is timely, coinciding with the Sultan of Selangor's Silver Jubilee celebrations this year. Minister Nga expressed optimism about the improvements this extension will bring to solid waste management across the state, involving all 12 local authorities.

Key measures under the plan include strengthening waste segregation at the source to improve the national recycling rate, transitioning garbage collection vehicles to electric power from fossil fuels, and shifting waste collection operations to nighttime schedules. Minister Nga emphasized the goal of ensuring that the country is clean and orderly by morning, as part of the 13th Malaysia Plan.

Previously, Act 672 was implemented in states such as Johor, Melaka, Negeri Sembilan, Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya, Kedah, Perlis, and Pahang. The states of Perak, Penang, Kelantan, Terengganu, and Selangor had not yet adopted the Act, making this new decision a pivotal development for Selangor.
