Budget 2027: Emphasis on Youth Opportunities and Living Standards

Kuala Lumpur:Immediate aid for young people facing living cost challenges must be complemented by opportunities for better employment, income, and access to basic services.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Ahmad Fahmi Mohd Samsudin, President of the Muslim Youth Movement of Malaysia (ABIM), emphasized the need for attention on these issues before the 2027 Budget presentation. He highlighted the importance of providing young people with opportunities to secure a brighter future.

During the Youth Economic Forum 2026, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim stressed the role of young people in leading the country. Ahmad Fahmi noted that this focus should be reflected in the budget, advocating for youth involvement in policy formulation and implementation evaluation.

He also pointed out that savings challenges among employed individuals are linked to income, living costs, and available opportunities. ABIM supports enhancing government aid, including initiatives like Sumbangan Asas Rahmah (SARA), SARA for All, and Sumbangan Tunai Rahmah (STR).

Ahmad Fahmi stated that the 2027 Budget should ensure adequate assistance amounts, clear disbursement schedules, and comprehensive coverage for those in need. This includes addressing monthly expenses like food, transportation, and utilities.

He stressed that additional allocations should prioritize low-income groups, young families, and those with unstable incomes. Evaluating the frequency and amount of payments, along with eligibility criteria, is essential.

The unemployment rate for youths aged 15 to 24 was 10.2% in July 2026, affecting 292,500 individuals. Ahmad Fahmi urged the budget to focus on the transition from education to employment. He suggested that employers receiving training incentives report on employee wages and career progress.

The need for safe, affordable housing and targeted deposit assistance for relocating youths was highlighted. For young couples, addressing childcare costs through subsidies and expanding quality childcare centers is crucial.

Ahmad Fahmi also advocated for educational support for low-income families and financial aid for university students. He emphasized continuous social protection for gig workers, AI training, TVET opportunities, and attention to mental health and psychosocial support for young people.
