Kuala lumpur: Malaysian Bioeconomy Development Corporation (Bioeconomy Corporation) and Sarawak Medical Centre, the owner and operator of Normah Medical Specialist Centre, have entered a partnership to explore advancements in regenerative medicine and healthcare innovation in Sarawak.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, this collaboration was formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), which offers a framework for both parties to delve into potential applications in regenerative medicine, precision diagnostics, medical devices, and complementary medicine. The initiative also aims to introduce locally developed bio-based healthcare solutions to enhance patient care and bolster Sarawak's healthcare innovation ecosystem.
Sarawak Medical Centre, entirely owned by Sarawak State Financial Secretary Incorporated, is a government-owned healthcare entity playing a strategic role in advancing the state's healthcare innovation. Under this partnership, Bioeconomy Corporation, operating under the Ministry of Science, Technology, and Innovation (MOSTI), will connect Normah Medical Specialist Centre with local healthcare technologies and solutions from its portfolio companies and the broader biotechnology ecosystem.
Normah Medical Specialist Centre will contribute clinical insights and support the evaluation of these innovations, providing access to clinical expertise and facilities as needed. This collaboration comes at a crucial time as Malaysia grapples with an ageing population, with Sarawak recording the second-highest percentage of individuals aged 65 and above among the 12 ageing states at 9.7 percent.
Moreover, Sarawak's medical tourism sector is thriving, receiving over 104,000 medical tourists in 2025 and generating RM203 million in revenue-a 27 percent increase from 2024. Bioeconomy Corporation CEO Mohd Khairul Fidzal Abdul Razak noted that these developments present an opportunity for Sarawak to reinforce its position as a regional healthcare destination.
Khairul emphasized the importance of not only developing new healthcare technologies but ensuring their practical application in clinical settings. He stated that the MoU serves as a platform to connect Malaysia's biotechnology ecosystem with healthcare providers, facilitating innovations in regenerative medicine and precision diagnostics to support Sarawak's healthcare aspirations.
Following the MoU, Bioeconomy Corporation will collaborate with BioNexus-status companies and those under the Bio-based Accelerator (BBA) program to identify healthcare technologies and solutions suitable for development with Normah Medical Specialist Centre. This partnership offers healthcare professionals at Normah the chance to explore the latest technologies and assess their potential clinical applications, ultimately benefiting patients with improved healthcare services.
The collaboration aligns with the National Biotechnology Policy 2.0 objectives under MOSTI, focusing on accelerating biotechnology commercialization, enhancing industry-healthcare sector collaboration, and translating Malaysian biotechnology innovations into practical healthcare applications.
