Bilateral Cooperation Takes Centre Stage In Anwar-Lawrence Meeting

Kuala lumpur: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim says efforts to strengthen the friendship between Malaysia and Singapore were among the matters discussed during his meeting with Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong today. According to BERNAMA News Agency, the discussion also touched on measures to enhance cooperation in resolving outstanding issues involving the two countries. Anwar expressed his appreciation for Prime Minister Lawrence's visit, highlighting the significance of their meeting in reinforcing bilateral ties. He emphasized the hope that this meeting, coinciding with Ramadan, would foster lasting understanding and prosperity for both nations. Anwar noted that the meeting with Wong was particularly meaningful as it took place at a historic mansion that had witnessed pivotal events such as the signing of the Federation of Malaya Agreement in 1948 and the Independence Agreement in 1957. The meeting, which lasted nearly three hours, included a tour and briefing on the history and conservatio n efforts of Seri Negara under the Warisan Kuala Lumpur initiative. During the visit, Anwar hosted Wong for the breaking of fast, followed by a one-on-one discussion over dinner. Wong, who arrived in Malaysia at 4.05 pm, concluded his special visit later that day. The Foreign Ministry mentioned in a statement that both prime ministers were expected to discuss bilateral cooperation and mutual interests, including the outcomes of the Singapore-Malaysia Leaders' Retreat held on December 4 last year. Additionally, Singapore remains Malaysia's second-largest trading partner, with total trade reaching RM402.35 billion (USD93.97 billion) in 2025, marking a 1.5 percent increase from 2024.
