Azizulhasni Acknowledged as a National Asset with Velodrome Renaming Proposal

Nilai: The Ministry of Youth and Sports (KBS) has described national track cycling ace Datuk Mohd Azizulhasni Awang as a highly valuable asset whose contributions must continue to be recognised and preserved for the advancement of the country's sporting excellence. Youth and Sports Minister Dr Mohammed Taufiq Johari stated that the ministry welcomed the motion approved by the Malaysian National Cycling Federation (MNCF) to rename the National Velodrome in Nilai, Negeri Sembilan as Velodrom Azizulhasni, as the highest form of appreciation for the athlete.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the minister expressed openness to further discussions with the federation and relevant parties regarding the proposal. He emphasized the importance of safeguarding and sustaining national assets like Datuk Jijoe (Azizulhasni) and acknowledged that recognising such contributions at both ministry and government levels is essential.

Dr Taufiq made these remarks after officiating the Malaysia International Muay Championship 2026 (MIMAC 3.0) at Dataran Warisan. Earlier, the MNCF had approved a motion to rename the National Velodrome, acknowledging Azizulhasni's significant contributions to Malaysian cycling.

In addition, Dr Mohammed Taufiq addressed the future of 'The Pocket Rocketman' ahead of the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games (LA28). He assured that the ministry would not pressure the Tokyo Olympic silver medallist to continue competing, granting him full autonomy to decide the best course for his career.

The minister highlighted that discussions are ongoing, and the decision rests entirely with Datuk Jijoe, allowing him the necessary space and freedom to determine his next steps. Former MNCF vice-president Khairy Jamaluddin Abu Bakar had previously advised against pressuring Azizulhasni to compete until the LA28 Olympic Games.
