Anwar Highlights Strong Global Partnerships as Crucial for Malaysia’s Semiconductor and E&E Industries’ Growth

Kuala lumpur: Malaysia and ASEAN can only achieve true success if regional trade and investment continue to strengthen, alongside greater focus on new areas such as digital technology and artificial intelligence (AI), said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. He emphasized the importance of robust international ties, particularly with economic superpowers like the United States and China, to ensure the thriving of Malaysia’s electrical and electronic (E and E) and semiconductor industries.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Anwar highlighted that Malaysia’s exports to the United States are significant, meeting about 25 percent of the US’s E and E and semiconductor demands, valued at nearly RM200 billion. This sector involves thousands of supply chains and employs tens of thousands of workers. Anwar reiterated Malaysia’s commitment to ASEAN centrality, maintaining close ties with China, which is poised for rapid industrial and technological growth.

The Prime Minister was speaking at the launch of the Malaysia Semiconductor IC Design Park 2, an event co-organized by the Selangor Information Technology and Digital Economy Corporation (Sidec) and the Selangor state government. Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari was also present at the event.

Anwar stressed the necessity for Malaysia to expand its trade networks and exports to new markets, emphasizing the untapped potential in regions like Africa and Latin America. He mentioned ongoing efforts to establish ties with countries such as Brazil and South Africa as part of this strategy for future growth.

Political stability and efficient policy execution were identified by Anwar as the two key pillars for the success of Malaysia’s semiconductor strategy. He called for a stable political system and a clear industrial roadmap to guide the nation’s next steps in this sector. Anwar warned against a ‘culture of complacency’ that could impede progress, urging for clear policies and swift, efficient implementation.

The Prime Minister acknowledged challenges in ensuring effective policy execution and avoiding complacency. He commended the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI) and the Selangor state government for their success in attracting investors and researchers, indicating that Malaysia is on the right track.

Regarding semiconductor investments, Anwar assured that Malaysia has the capacity to provide the necessary infrastructure and competitive incentives to position itself as an attractive investment destination. He highlighted the need for a highly skilled workforce, emphasizing the importance of nurturing talent equipped with up-to-date skills to safeguard national interests.

Anwar also called for a holistic view of the semiconductor ecosystem, focusing on clear policies, efficient implementation, and homegrown innovation. He stressed the importance of enhancing Malaysia’s economic value-added through innovation and creativity, forming the foundation of the country’s digital and AI transformation policy.
