Ancient Perahu Discovery In Tanah Merah Carries Immense Historical Value – National Heritage Department

Kuala lumpur: The National Heritage Department has conducted a preliminary survey following the discovery of an ancient perahu (traditional Malay boat) structure in Kampung Bukit Kechik, Tanah Merah, to determine its historical importance and significance.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, based on its physical characteristics, the boat is believed to have been crafted from local hardwoods such as cengal or meranti. The department noted that the boat featured traditional carpentry techniques, including mortise and tenon joints, as well as wooden pegs.

"This construction method indirectly reflects the high level of craftsmanship possessed by traditional Malay boat makers, who skillfully adapted their designs to the ever-changing conditions of rivers," said the department in a statement today.

The department emphasised that the discovery is more than just a physical artifact; it carries immense historical value in illustrating the way of life of the bygone Tanah Merah community. Communities of that era are believed to have relied entirely on rivers as their main routes for trade, communication, and daily activities.

Detailed research and further documentation will be carried out to ensure that this heritage of water transportation can be preserved as part of Kelantan's historical identity. Meanwhile, the National Heritage Department also expressed its deepest appreciation to the Kampung Bukit Kechik community for their unwavering support and cooperation in efforts to salvage the boat.

In light of this, the public is urged to report any potential cultural heritage discoveries to the department, so that these treasures can be preserved for the benefit of future generations.
