Air Pollution May Lead to School Closures in Perak

Ipoh:Perak Schools in Perak face potential closures on Monday if Air Pollution Index (API) readings remain at unhealthy levels in certain districts, following monitoring scheduled for Sunday.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, State Education, Higher Education, Youth and Sports Committee chairman Datuk Khairudin Abu Hanipah stated that a decision on school operations would be based on these API readings to ensure student safety. Previously, 362 schools across three districts were closed when the API at a Tasek Ipoh monitoring station reached 180. An announcement regarding school status is expected around 2 or 3 pm, depending on Sunday's readings.

Khairudin added that if closures occur, the Home-Based Teaching and Learning (PdPR) method will be implemented to continue education. He also welcomed the federal government's approval of a new school, Sekolah Kebangsaan Seri Chemor, through Budget 2027, to address overcrowding and facility conditions.

In other news, allegations of bullying at a Chemor school are under police investigation. Several reports, including one from a teacher, have prompted consultations involving school authorities and parents. The District Education Office and the Perak State Education Department have conducted necessary processes, and the case is now with the police.

Additionally, a separate incident involving an 11-year-old student allegedly assaulted by a teacher in Pengkalan Hulu is under investigation. The school has followed standard procedures for student safety, and the police are handling the matter. The incident reportedly occurred due to a misunderstanding involving inappropriate language.
