1MDB Scandal Verdict: Institutional Justice Over Political Gain

Kuala lumpur: The High Court's recent ruling in the 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) scandal is being highlighted as a demonstration of institutional justice rather than a political triumph or the downfall of an individual. This perspective is being shared by the Malaysian Islamic Youth Movement (ABIM), emphasizing the importance of justice for the people and the nation.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, ABIM president Ahmad Fahmi Mohd Samsudin remarked that while the decision is still open to appeal, it was made based on substantial evidence and the rule of law. He stressed that the judgment is the culmination of a long, transparent legal process, underscoring that no one is exempt from the law's reach.

Ahmad Fahmi further stated that the decision should be embraced with maturity, serving to restore public faith in the judicial system and national institutions. He highlighted that justice is attained through a legal and civilized process, not merely through individual courage but through the collective efforts of investigative journalists, whistleblowers, and civil society.

The High Court sentenced Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak to 15 years in prison and fined him RM11.4 billion after finding him guilty of multiple charges, including abuse of power and money laundering involving RM2.3 billion from 1MDB funds. Ahmad Fahmi described the 1MDB scandal as not only a financial crime but also a transgression against trust and civilization, impacting the country's international reputation.

He noted that the heavy sentence is not an act of revenge but a reminder of the grave consequences of betraying public trust. Ahmad Fahmi called for systemic reforms to prevent future abuses of power, advocating for stronger governance structures and the separation of critical government roles.

ABIM is urging the Malaysian government to learn from the 1MDB scandal by re-evaluating the centralization of power and discussing measures such as separating the roles of the Prime Minister and the Minister of Finance. Ahmad Fahmi concluded by emphasizing the importance of these lessons for politicians and the younger generation, warning against the normalization of corruption and its potential to undermine national values and future confidence.
