Young Boy Revives Passion for Traditional Wayang Kulit

Kampung Kubang Sipot:A young boy in Malaysia is breathing new life into the traditional art of wayang kulit, a shadow puppet theater that is at risk of fading into obscurity. Ten-year-old Nik Imanuddin Hadeef Nik Izdiharuddin has become deeply invested in the art form, practicing puppet manipulation and voice acting, as well as learning to play the accompanying musical instruments.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Nik Imanuddin's journey into wayang kulit began unexpectedly with a school science project two years ago. His teacher assigned him to create an object that could cast a shadow. With his mother's help, they crafted wayang kulit puppets from cardboard, igniting his interest.

His fascination with wayang kulit quickly grew, and he began making more puppets and practicing the art of storytelling. Despite the challenges of mastering different character voices, Nik Imanuddin remains committed to improving his skills. He has even found guidance under the mentorship of renowned practitioner Kang Boon Ann, known as Che Ann, from the Sri Cindayu Wayang Kulit Association.

The mentorship began after Nik Imanuddin discovered Che Ann's work on TikTok, leading to a meeting and subsequent training sessions with the association. His dedication was showcased when he made his debut performance at Tok Bali, an experience that has fueled his passion further.

Nik Imanuddin's mother, Nur Hazween Mohd Hasni, notes her son's increased confidence and improved social interactions since his involvement with wayang kulit. She believes nurturing his interest is crucial to preserving the traditional art for future generations.

His father, Nik Izdiharuddin Abu Bakar, supports his son's passion, emphasizing the importance of balancing schoolwork with his interests. He expresses hope that his son's engagement with wayang kulit will inspire other children to appreciate and participate in traditional arts.

As Nik Imanuddin continues to hone his craft, he represents a new generation that could help ensure wayang kulit's survival and resurgence in Malaysia.
