Yong Peng School Murder Sparks Security Review and Investigation

Yong Peng:A secondary school in Yong Peng, Johor, where a Form Four female student was allegedly found murdered, is equipped with CCTV cameras, but none were installed at the location where the incident occurred.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Education Minister Datuk Seri Fadhlina Sidek stated that the Ministry of Education (MOE) is upgrading the CCTV facilities and has launched an investigation into the school's security company to determine whether there were any breaches of standard operating procedures (SOPs).

Fadhlina emphasized that any school with non-functional or damaged CCTV systems should inform the ministry to improve their functionality for effective monitoring. She also mentioned that a comprehensive review of the security company's patrol records and duties on the day of the incident is underway, with potential financial penalties or contract termination if breaches are found.

The minister urged the public to refrain from spreading false information, such as claims about the victim being dragged from the prayer room or broken glass in the surau, to respect the grieving family and the underage suspect under police investigation.

Expressing condolences to the victim's family, Fadhlina affirmed the ministry's commitment to seeking justice for Irene Sofiya Mohd Khairool Faisal, 16, whose death is being investigated by the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM). She was found dead with injuries suggesting murder in the school hall last Saturday at 5.30 pm by her grandmother and a friend after failing to return home from extra classes.
