Accra:Safety advocate Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye emphasized the importance of a workplace culture that prioritizes prevention over reaction. He believes that a successful organization ensures the safety and health of its workforce daily, beyond just achieving productivity and profitability.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Lee explained that workplace safety should be ingrained at all levels through leadership, commitment, and accountability. He highlighted various hazards, including chemicals, electricity, and psychosocial risks like stress and bullying, which can impact workers' safety and wellbeing across different workplaces such as factories, offices, and schools.
He stressed that prevention should take precedence, as accidents often result from unsafe conditions, poor training, and weak communication. Safety measures, including inspections and training, should be seen as essential life-saving practices rather than mere formalities.
Lee also emphasized the importance of open communication about hazards, encouraging workers to report risks without fear of blame. He pointed out that organizations should focus on identifying and addressing root causes of incidents to prevent recurrence, viewing safety as an investment that enhances productivity and morale.
As workplaces evolve with new technologies and flexible arrangements, Lee urged companies to adapt their safety strategies to ensure that technological advancements contribute to safer working environments.
