Hulu terengganu: A cake factory worker lost RM166,000 after falling victim to an online investment scam recently. Hulu Terengganu police chief Supt Sharudin Abdul Wahab reported that the 43-year-old woman encountered a man on the social networking app Litmatch on January 15.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, the suspect persuaded the woman to join an investment scheme he claimed could yield quick and high returns. Trusting his words, the woman sold her jewellery and inherited property, and also withdrew her savings. She then made 16 online transactions, totaling RM166,000, into several bank accounts as directed by the suspect.
Sharudin stated that the woman realized she had been deceived when the suspect refused to return her investment capital and the profits she was supposed to have made. Consequently, she lodged a police report yesterday.
The case is currently under investigation under Section 420 of the Penal Code. Sharudin emphasized the importance of obtaining verified information from official sources and recommended that the public carry out checks via the Semakmule portal or the NSRC (National Scam Response Centre) 997 hotline to avoid falling victim to scams.
