JITRA: Newlywed couple, who were so looking forward to holding their wedding feast (kenduri) today, were forced to donate the food to the public when the homestay they had rented for the reception in Titi Besi, Kepala Batas here, was flooded. The couple, Mohamed Khairie Mohamed Kamal, 28, and Nur Izzatul Asma Mustafa, 22, were also compelled to not only downsize their guest list but change the venue for the reception to the bride’s grandfather’s house in Kampung Hutan Kandis, Alor Setar.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Nur Izzatul Asma explained that they had ordered catering for 1,200 wedding guests. However, due to the unforeseen circumstances, all the food had to be packed and distributed to friends and family as well as to tahfiz centres and the public. “It is indeed sad because we had to hold the wedding yesterday followed by the reception today in a flood situation, but I accept this fate,” she said when met while distributing food and souvenirs to the public in Kepala Batas town here today.

atul Asma expressed her gratitude towards the guests, particularly friends and family, who attended the wedding ceremony despite the challenges. Attendees had to utilize boats owned by local residents and four-wheel drives to reach the venue. A clerk by profession, Nur Izzatul Asma shared that the wedding ceremony had been planned since May, with expenses including wedding attire amounting to RM20,000. Despite feeling despondent due to the situation, she and her husband accepted the events and considered their wedding day a historic occasion in their lives.

“We celebrated our wedding by taking photographs in our wedding outfits and even took a boat as well as four-wheel drive against the backdrop of the flooded area,” Nur Izzatul Asma remarked. Meanwhile, Mohamed Khairie, a salesman, expressed disappointment that only three of his family members from Simpang Kuala, Alor Setar could attend the wedding reception due to many roads being inaccessible because of the floods.

“Usually, I watch such cases on televi
sion and social media but never imagined that my wife and I would encounter such a situation. However, we have accepted this as we are unable to do anything else,” added Mohamed Khairie.
