Kota marudu: Villages in Paitan, including parts of Kota Marudu and Pitas that have been cut off from communication networks due to flooding, will be provided with temporary Starlink satellite internet. This measure is aimed at ensuring residents can access essential communications and aid.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Sabah Minister of Education, Science, Technology and Innovation, Datuk James Ratib, announced that Sabah Net Sdn Bhd has been instructed to provide this service free of charge to isolated areas where floodwaters have submerged communication towers. Ratib highlighted that Starlink can function without a traditional power supply, as it can be powered from a car, making it a viable short-term communication solution.
The service will also be extended to security agencies, particularly in regions like Paitan that remain challenging to access. Ratib made these remarks following his visit to the Binsulung and Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Simpangan temporary relief centers. The flooding in Paitan is reported to be among the worst in Sugut's history, impacting 87 villages and prompting the establishment of 22 relief centers currently accommodating approximately 700 evacuees.
Ratib further explained that the government has provided boats and outboard engines to facilitate the evacuation of flood victims to relief centers. These communication tools and logistical support are deemed essential for maintaining the safety of residents and ensuring effective delivery of aid.
In light of the situation, Ratib plans to meet with Sabah Education Director Datuk Raisin Said to discuss the potential postponement of school openings scheduled for Monday, as 19 schools in Paitan are impacted by the floods. Many of these schools remain flooded, with damage reported to school furniture, computers, and other equipment. Consultations with the Ministry of Education will also be pursued to address these damages and provide immediate assistance.
Ratib intends to visit affected schools in Kota Marudu and Pitas as well, underscoring the government's commitment to addressing the challenges posed by the floods.
