Klang:Unpredictable weather, marked by frequent rain, has not deterred Hindu devotees from last-minute shopping at Little India in Jalan Tengku Kelana ahead of the upcoming Deepavali celebrations.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, a survey revealed that the bustling enclave, which houses over 100 shops, was filled with crowds purchasing apparel, jewellery, food, and prayer items in preparation for the Festival of Lights.
Despite the traders offering deep discounts, many visitors chose to spend their weekends exploring the vibrant commercial district with their families. Engineer S. Meiyarasan, 28, mentioned that his family opted for last-minute shopping while keeping an eye on Klang's weather, which typically experiences afternoon downpours.
S. Kalaiselvi, 55, emphasized the importance of physical shopping over online alternatives, particularly for festive attire like sarees and dhotis. She noted that although the rainy weather posed some inconvenience, it was crucial to complete preparations for the festival celebrated once a year.
N. Ravi Chandran, owner of Sri Kumaran Textile, said his store extended business hours until late due to high customer demand and afternoon rain, with nearly 2,000 customers visiting, especially over the weekends. The festive atmosphere was enhanced by discount offers ranging from 30 to 50 percent.
Former factory worker M. Sarkunan, 66, expressed his preference for Klang's Little India due to its affordability, noting that prices were over 10 percent cheaper, which helped ease expenses before celebrating at his child's house in Kulim, Kedah.
