Kanowit: National Unity Minister Datuk Aaron Ago Dagang has described Sarawak as a model of successful inclusive development built on unity, ethnic harmony, and social cohesion. He said findings from the 2025 National Unity Index (IPNas) showed Sarawak recorded the highest score in the country at 0.791, reflecting the state's strong and resilient foundation of unity.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, the minister emphasized that this success is a result of a community culture that emphasizes togetherness and mutual respect. He stated that Sarawak's achievement should serve as a reference point in strengthening unity at the national level. He made these remarks while officiating the Kanowit Cultural Festival 2026 Series 1 at Kanowit Waterfront.
The inaugural festival aims to preserve and strengthen ethnic customs and heritage while also boosting the socio-economic development of local communities. This is achieved through the sale of local products and the promotion of social unity. The festival, running from today until May 31, features a variety of programs including the Gawai Bazaar, the Niti Daun program (Gawai Day parade), Betaboh and Ngajat competitions, and the Pekit Kumang contest.
Datuk Aaron Ago Dagang also expressed hope that the festival would be included in the official calendar of the Sarawak Tourism Board as an iconic event for Kanowit, alongside the annual Kanowit Festival held every October. Earlier, he participated in the Niti Daun program in Kanowit, marking the start of the Gawai celebration, which drew participation from various ethnic communities, including the Iban, Malay, Chinese, Bidayuh, and Orang Ulu.
A total of 36 contingents joined the parade around Kanowit town, showcasing colorful traditional costumes and cultural dance performances representing various ethnic groups, reflecting the spirit of unity and harmony among Sarawak's multiracial communities.
