U Mobile Names Huawei Malaysia, ZTE Malaysia as 5G Network Tech Partners

Kuala Lumpur: U Mobile Sdn Bhd has appointed Huawei Malaysia and ZTE Malaysia as its technology partners for its next-generation 5G network. U Mobile chairman Tan Sri Vincent Tan stated that these partnerships were selected through a rigorous, transparent process to ensure the company secures the best technology providers. The goal is to achieve 80 percent population coverage within the first 12 months of network deployment and establish a strong foundation for innovative 5G services for both consumers and enterprises.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, both companies have long been trusted infrastructure partners for U Mobile, demonstrating global deployment capabilities. Huawei will oversee the deployment in West Malaysia, while ZTE will lead in East Malaysia. Tan expressed anticipation for closely working with both partners to usher Malaysia into the 5G era.

Tan highlighted that the government’s introduction of the 5G dual network model has fostered greater industry participation and encouraged healthy competition. He emphasized U Mobile’s role in supporting the national digital agenda, including initiatives like the National Digital Network (Jendela), the Malaysia Digital Economy Blueprint, and the MyDigital initiative.

U Mobile’s investments and innovations have led to competitive offerings and enhanced services, with over RM8 billion invested in network and technology infrastructure to date. The company prides itself on being the first in the country to offer unlimited data, free roaming, and contract-free 5G fixed wireless broadband plans. Tan noted that their pioneering efforts have earned the MADANI government’s endorsement to roll out Malaysia’s second 5G network.

Earlier, Communication Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil, China’s Party Secretary of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology Li Lecheng, and Tan witnessed the agreement signing between U Mobile, Huawei Malaysia, and ZTE Malaysia. U Mobile CEO Wong Heang Tuck inked the agreements with Huawei Malaysia’s CEO Simon Sun and ZTE Malaysia’s Managing Director Steven Ge.

During the media briefing, U Mobile CTO Woon Ooi Yuen stated that the company’s enterprise-grade, next-gen 5G network will enhance customers’ experiences with advanced and future-proofed technology. The network will feature cutting-edge capabilities, future-ready infrastructure, efficient network structure, and robust security. Key focus areas will include transportation hubs, medical and sports facilities, smart cities, and data centers, with 5G indoor coverage in all building areas.

Woon added that Huawei and ZTE were chosen as technology partners due to their global technology track record and shared vision for an efficient and rapid rollout.
