Kuala lumpur: U Mobile Sdn Bhd has upgraded 2,976 sites to 5G coverage, achieving 58.2 per cent 5G coverage in populated areas as of October 31 this year, according to the Communications Ministry.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, the ministry disclosed that 11 buildings have been equipped with 5G infrastructure. These sites will become operational in stages as per the implementation schedule, indicating an active rollout phase in the national 5G network expansion. This information was shared in a written reply on the Parliament website today.
The ministry was responding to a query from Yusuf Abd Wahab (GPS-Tanjong Manis), who sought updates on the 5G network’s development nationwide following U Mobile’s appointment in early 2025 and the current status of the company’s major shareholders.
The ministry emphasized that the dual 5G network approach will stimulate greater competition within the telecommunications sector, fostering innovation and enhancing service quality.
The establishment of the second 5G network by U Mobile is expected to diversify service options in Malaysia, ensuring consumers benefit from more competitive prices and improved coverage. This strategy is vital in bridging the digital divide and driving economic growth through enhanced digital infrastructure and broader coverage, particularly in underserved rural regions.
