Pahang: An elderly trader parted with RM300,378 after falling victim to an investment scam syndicate through social media in November last year. Pahang Police Chief Datuk Seri Yahaya Othman reported that the 63-year-old man was lured by the promise of lucrative returns on cryptocurrency investments after visiting the Silegx website, which he discovered on Facebook.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, the trader initiated his first transaction on November 25 and received a return of RM20,698 on January 1. Encouraged by this return, he continued to invest more money. However, he soon faced difficulties withdrawing his investment funds. In an attempt to resolve this, he was instructed to deposit additional funds, which led him to suspect that he had been scammed. Over the course of 10 transactions, he transferred a total of RM300,378 to nine different accounts.
Yahaya has urged the public to exercise caution and conduct thorough checks before engaging in any online investments, to avoid falling prey to fraudulent schemes. He also warned against being easily swayed by investment schemes that promise high returns.
