Kuala Lumpur: PETRONAS through Malaysia Petroleum Management (MPM), is pleased to announce the first oil delivery from the Gumusut-Kakap/Geronggong-Jagus East (GKGJE) Phase 4 project, achieved on 4 February 2025. This event marks another milestone in the cross-border collaboration between Malaysia and Brunei, reinforcing regional cooperation in deepwater oil production. The GKGJE Phase 4 project comprises three oil producers and one water injector, strategically positioned with two wells located in Malaysia and two in Brunei. Designed to maximise resource recovery and enhance production efficiency, the project is tied back to the Gumusut-Kakap Floating Production System (FPS), further solidifying its role as a key deepwater production hub in Malaysia.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, the successful delivery underscores the collaborative efforts of both nations in the energy sector, highlighting the potential for future joint ventures. The strategic positioning of the wells allows for optimal resource extraction, ensuring that both countries benefit from the shared oil reserves. The project not only enhances production efficiency but also strengthens the economic ties between Malaysia and Brunei, potentially paving the way for more integrated energy projects in the region.
The Gumusut-Kakap Floating Production System plays a crucial role in this collaboration, acting as the central hub for processing and exporting the extracted oil. This system’s integration into the GKGJE Phase 4 project exemplifies its importance in Malaysia’s deepwater production strategy. By leveraging advanced technology and strategic planning, the project aims to set a benchmark for future deepwater oil extraction initiatives in Southeast Asia.
The collaboration between Malaysia and Brunei through the GKGJE Phase 4 project represents a significant achievement in regional energy cooperation. As both nations continue to explore and develop their shared resources, the successful first oil delivery serves as a testament to the potential of joint ventures in enhancing resource recovery and production efficiency in the deepwater oil sector.
