Tokong Mek, A Lasting Symbol Of Community Harmony

Kota bharu: The existence of a 147-year-old drum, bestowed by Sultan Muhammad II in 1879 at Tokong Mek, is not only among Kelantan's tourism icons but also a symbol of community harmony, especially during Chinese New Year celebrations. Pertubuhan Penganut Tokong Mek deputy chairman Tan Kien Seng said the drum placed at the temple clearly proves that the relationship between the Ruler and the people has long been established, regardless of religious and racial backgrounds.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Tan Kien Seng emphasized that Tokong Mek is more than just a place of worship; it stands as a historical testament to the enduring relationship between the two main communities in Kelantan. The drum, measuring one metre in length and half a metre in width, features an inscription by Sultan Mohamed Ke-II (Tuan Senik bin Long Tan) dated 1879, which continues to draw visitors eager to witness its uniqueness.

When met by Bernama at the Chinese temple located in Kampung Cina, Jalan Pantai Cahaya Bulan recently, Tan noted that the well-preserved drum, encased in glass, attracts numerous visitors from various communities-Malays, Indians, and Siamese alike-who come to learn about its history, further cementing the temple's status as a tourism icon. The drum, a gift from the then Sultan of Kelantan, symbolizes the deep-rooted friendship between the Malay and Chinese communities in the state.

Tan highlighted that such bonds have thrived for centuries, with the local community, especially the Chinese and Malays, maintaining close ties and mutual support. During Chinese New Year celebrations, many Malays join in to witness the festivities, including firecracker displays. This year, the association adorned the 236-year-old temple with 1,000 lanterns for the occasion.

Meanwhile, local resident Ahmad Faisal Othman, 25, shared that Tokong Mek has long co-existed with the Malay community in the village, hosting engaging activities during Chinese New Year. Ahmad Faisal expressed his enthusiasm for the vibrant celebrations, drawing people from various communities to partake in the unique festivities.

K. Rajan, a visitor from the Indian community in Tumpat, remarked on the distinctiveness of Tokong Mek compared to other temples in Kelantan. He appreciated the temple's intricate carvings depicting historical scenes and found it especially captivating during Chinese New Year, when lantern decorations enhance its vibrancy.
