Penang: The Thaipusam celebration in Penang contributes to the growth of the state's tourism sector, boosting the local economy and benefiting small traders, tourism operators, and local communities. Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow highlighted the significance of Thaipusam in demonstrating cultural and religious diversity, which not only strengthens unity among the people but also serves as a catalyst for the state's socio-economic development.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Chow emphasized the importance of the direct flight between Chennai, India, and Penang, which is expected to enhance cultural ties and increase tourist arrivals from India to the state. He noted that the Arulmigu Balathandayuthapani Temple is a central point of the celebration, symbolizing devotion and spiritual strength, and highlighted the universal values embodied in Thaipusam that are applicable across different religions and cultures.

Chow remarked on Penang's political stability, good governance, and inclusive leadership that foster a sense of unity among communities. He expressed gratitude to those involved in organizing the Thaipusam celebration, ensuring its smooth execution each year.

Thaipusam in Penang is celebrated uniquely with Chetti Pusam, a day earlier, featuring processions with peacock kavadi and chariots. Since 2017, the celebration has included a golden chariot carrying the vel of Lord Murugan, enhancing the event's grandeur.

Chow also reiterated the state government's commitment to the development of Tamil National-Type Schools (SJKT) in Penang. He welcomed the Prime Minister's announcement of a RM50 million allocation for SJKT maintenance nationwide, benefiting all 28 SJKTs in the state. Last year, the state government allocated RM2.42 million to improve school infrastructure, digital facilities, and STEM education, exemplified by the development at SJKT Ramakrishnan and plans for SJKT Rajaji in Air Itam.
