Terengganu State Government to Enhance Waste Management on Pulau Redang

Kuala Lampur:The Terengganu state government is planning to increase waste collection efforts on Pulau Redang, aiming to conduct daily trips to the mainland rather than the current schedule of once every two days. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to tackle ongoing waste management issues on the popular resort island.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, this proposal was a key topic during a recent visit by Terengganu Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar and the State Executive Council (MMKN) to Pulau Redang. The delegation, including State Local Government, Housing and Health Committee chairman Datuk Wan Sukairi Wan Abdullah, focused on improving solid waste management, inspecting the existing incinerator, and reviewing the construction progress of a new waste storage facility by the Kuala Terengganu City Council (MBKT).

During the visit, MBKT along with the State Economic Planning Unit (UPEN) and other stakeholders, including chalet and resort operators, provided briefings on current waste management practices. The state government is also addressing drainage issues on the island, seeking effective solutions based on the insights gathered.

UPEN released a statement affirming the commitment of the Terengganu state government to resolve sewage management challenges on Pulau Redang. The statement highlighted that several short- and long-term solutions have been identified and are being refined. Collaborative efforts with relevant agencies and resort operators are ongoing to ensure these solutions are implemented successfully, with an emphasis on environmental protection, sustainability, and visitor comfort.
