Kelantan:Water shortages resulting from the Super El Niño phenomenon, which could persist until early next year, may affect firefighting operations in Kelantan, particularly if the state experiences a dry spell after the Northeast Monsoon (NEM).
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Kelantan Fire and Rescue Department director Farhan Sufyan Borhan expressed concerns that dry conditions and low rainfall could not only increase the risk of open burning but also potentially reduce the availability of water for firefighting operations. The department fears that water supplies from fire hydrants, domestic sources, and open water sources could be affected if the phenomenon continues until March next year.
Farhan Sufyan indicated that the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) forecasts the Super El Niño phenomenon to persist until early next year, although the exact end date remains uncertain. He highlighted the concern due to Kelantan's typical dry spell from late February to April, following the NEM period.
In March and April this year, Kelantan recorded 1,920 calls related to open burning, a significant increase from more than 300 calls during the same period in 2023. However, calls have declined recently as the state is experiencing the rainy season, with such incidents reported about once or twice a week.
Challenges in securing water supplies were noted, with areas such as Tumpat and Bachok facing difficulties when fire hydrant pressure is low or facilities are not fully functional. Water pressure varies depending on the time of day and consumption levels, affecting residential and industrial areas differently.
The department has 10 water tanker trucks ready for deployment alongside fire engines to address possible water supply constraints. Previous operations, such as one in Rantau Panjang, Pasir Mas, in July, faced difficulties securing water, highlighting the need for careful planning.
Firefighters will regulate water pressure during firefighting operations to ensure prudent use, prioritizing preventing fires from spreading to other areas.
