Perak: The Perak State Farmers Organisation (PPN) has prepared a contingency plan to mitigate the extreme weather impact of the Super El Nino phenomenon expected to hit the country.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, its chairman, Datuk Sham Mat Sahat, said early preparations covered water supply, seeds, and other agricultural inputs to ensure the state's padi sector remained unaffected by extreme heat. 'We want to be prepared early. Should a drought occur, we need to know what actions to take, and the contingency plan will be executed according to the situation. Early action must be taken to address this issue because if we delay, the situation could become critical,' he told reporters after chairing the Perak PPN meeting here today.

Sham said Perak PPN also operated several certified padi seed production plants to guarantee high-quality seed supplies to farmers, while collaborating with relevant departments to properly coordinate and distribute essential agricultural inputs. 'I have also asked relevant departments involving padi farmers to make early preparations because we need to know what to do and identify where problems need to be resolved,' he said.

Earlier, the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia), in its Long-Term Weather Outlook updated on July 29, expected the El Nino phenomenon to persist until early 2027. The situation is expected to result in lower rainfall across parts of the west coast, east coast and south of Peninsular Malaysia, central to western Sarawak, and eastern Sabah, thereby increasing the risk of drought and placing strain on national water resources.
