Kuala lumpur: The Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, today officiated the opening of the Royal Selangor Gallery at the historic Sultan Abdul Samad Building on Jalan Raja.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, the event, which commenced at 3 pm, saw the presence of Tengku Laksamana of Selangor, Tengku Sulaiman Shah, Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Federal Territories) Hannah Yeoh, and Royal Selangor Managing Director Datuk Yong Yoon Li.
In his speech, Yong highlighted that the 8,000-square-foot gallery narrates the brand's journey since the 1850s, alongside the broader history of families who have contributed to Kuala Lumpur's growth. Visitors can explore a range of design exhibits that trace the historical periods defining the city, culminating in an experiential walk that makes history tangible.
Yong also noted the gallery's strategic location, with a cafe overlooking the historic Padang, or Dataran Merdeka, a site of national significance where the Union Jack was lowered and Malaysia's flag was raised in 1957. He emphasized the exhibits' role as witnesses to history, showcasing a blend of European and Asian influences.
Furthermore, Yong mentioned that the gallery highlights Royal Selangor's status as a royal pewterer, a title conferred in 1979, which strengthens its bond of trust and excellence with the late Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah. The gallery also showcases replicas of iconic nation-building landmarks, emphasizing Royal Selangor's integral role in Malaysia's economic and social development.
The gallery's Cafe by Royal Selangor offers visitors a chance to appreciate views of the historic Padang while experiencing pewter craftsmanship, reflecting Kuala Lumpur's economic roots and entrepreneurial spirit, deeply embedded in the city's tin-mining heritage.
