Sultan Nazrin Urges Mosques to Expand Roles in Tackling Modern Challenges

Perak: Mosques must expand their roles and take greater responsibility in addressing the challenges facing today’s ummah, said Sultan Nazrin Shah. His Royal Highness emphasized that mosque committees and congregants should not ignore issues impacting the community but instead play an active role in addressing concerns such as food security, environmental protection, and public health.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Sultan Nazrin highlighted the importance of utilizing mosque lands for food security initiatives by cultivating vegetables and planting fruit trees. He commended the Agriculture Department for supporting a food security programme at 118 mosques in the state, encouraging more mosque committees to engage in similar activities.

Sultan Nazrin made these remarks during the presentation of instruments of appointment to the Perak Syariah Court judge, the president and members of the Perak Islamic Religious and Malay Customs Council (MAIPk), and members of the Mosque Consultative Council, as well as the presentation of business tithe.

He further suggested that mosques raise public awareness on environmental sustainability through ‘green mosque’ initiatives. These initiatives could focus on waste management, reducing plastic use, and introducing recycling programmes. Sultan Nazrin urged mosque committees to implement recycling initiatives and adopt green technologies, such as solar energy and rainwater harvesting systems.

With guidance from the Department of Environment, 20 mosques in Perak are now actively involved in recycling and environmental care programmes. Seven mosques were recently recognized with sustainable mosque awards for their successful efforts in collecting plastic waste and e-waste.

Sultan Nazrin also addressed health issues, urging mosque committees to organize health education lectures and activities to promote healthy lifestyles. He suggested collaboration with health professionals and conducting sports activities at mosque compounds. Additionally, Sultan Nazrin recommended changes in meal practices at mosques to promote healthier eating habits.
