Selangor:Smartsel Sdn Bhd and Pengurusan Air Selangor Sdn Bhd (Air Selangor), subsidiaries of Menteri Besar Selangor (Incorporation) (MBI Selangor), are set to explore the Selangor Dark Fibre Network 2.0. This initiative aims to utilize existing utility corridors to deploy high-capacity fibre networks.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, the project seeks to address the increasing demand for connectivity from telecommunications operators, data centres, cloud providers, artificial intelligence infrastructure, and businesses. The collaboration was formalised with the signing of a memorandum of collaboration at the Selangor International Business Summit (SIBS) 2026.
The partnership will integrate Air Selangor's water utility infrastructure with Smartsel's digital infrastructure and technology capabilities to enhance digital connectivity and intelligent infrastructure throughout Selangor. MBI Selangor's group chief executive officer, Datuk Ts Saipolyazan M Yusop, emphasized the importance of leveraging group synergy to create commercial opportunities and added value for the state.
The companies will also investigate smart water technologies, such as fibre sensing, the Internet of Things (IoT), and real-time monitoring, to improve pipeline surveillance, enable earlier leak detection, and enhance operational efficiency. Additionally, the potential use of elevated water tank and reservoir sites for telecommunications infrastructure and modular data centres will be assessed, subject to feasibility and operational requirements.
The collaboration will further explore enterprise connectivity, managed IT, cloud services, and cybersecurity to support Air Selangor's digital transformation. Both companies plan to establish a joint framework to evaluate priority initiatives and develop implementation roadmaps.
