Kota Kinabalu:The Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport Malaysia (CILTM) Sabah Section has applauded the decision of the Sabah Industrial Development, Entrepreneurship, and Transport Ministry to incorporate logistics into the proposed Sabah Sustainable Transport Masterplan.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, CILTM Chairman Daniel Doughty expressed this sentiment during a meeting with Deputy Chief Minister III and Industrial Development, Entrepreneurship and Transport Minister Datuk Ewon Benedick. The meeting was held at Ewon's office, where he also invited CILTM Sabah to join the ministry's industry task force to enhance industry involvement in state planning.
Doughty highlighted that including logistics in the masterplan is crucial for improving delivery reliability, reducing logistics costs, and enhancing market access. This inclusion is expected to boost business competitiveness and lower the cost of goods. He emphasized the need for a comprehensive masterplan that considers the entire supply chain, from producer to market, effectively connecting ports, airports, roads, shipping, warehousing, and distribution with the state's industrial and entrepreneurship requirements.
He further welcomed the ministry's plan to continue the Sabah Logistics Council, which provides a platform for government agencies and industry players to resolve operational issues and coordinate solutions across various jurisdictions.
Additionally, Doughty supported the decision by Sabah Customs to end the practice of allowing Labuan-bound cargo to transit through Kota Kinabalu Port. This practice was a temporary measure during the COVID-19 pandemic to address disruptions in direct vessel calls to Labuan. He noted that maintaining this arrangement could weaken the cargo volumes necessary for viable direct shipping services to Labuan and stressed the importance of coordinating with affected operators.
CILTM Sabah has also invited Ewon to attend its public forum on the future of Kota Kinabalu International Airport (KKIA) scheduled for November 7, 2026. The forum will feature expert discussions on whether KKIA should remain at its current location or be relocated, allowing the public to share their views and assess the implications of each option.
Doughty praised Ewon's engagement with industry stakeholders and emphasized the importance of coordinating transport, industrial development, and entrepreneurship under a single ministry for enhancing Sabah's economic competitiveness. CILTM Sabah is ready to offer its professional expertise to support the government's cooperation with the industry, aiming for practical improvements that benefit businesses and communities.
