Kuala lumpur: The Southwest Monsoon is set to commence on May 14 and continue through September, as announced by the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia). This seasonal shift will be characterized by consistent winds from the southwest, influencing the nation's weather patterns for the coming months.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, MetMalaysia's director-general, Dr. Mohd Hisham Mohd Anip, revealed that the onset of the monsoon will be accompanied by low humidity levels, resulting in decreased cloud formation across most regions. This typically signifies fewer rainy days and an increase in dry conditions throughout the country.
Dr. Mohd Hisham highlighted that despite the general trend of reduced rainfall, certain areas might still experience heavy rain, strong winds, and thunderstorms. The regions most likely to be affected are the western parts of Peninsular Malaysia, northern Sarawak, and western Sabah, mainly during early morning hours. This is due to the presence of squall lines forming over the Straits of Malacca and the eastern South China Sea, which can persist for several hours after moving inland.
He further warned that during the monsoon's peak, from July to September, there is a possibility of localised and transboundary haze if open burning activities are not properly managed. In response, he urged the public to refrain from open burning and to practice water conservation during this period.
For the latest updates on weather conditions, the public is encouraged to access MetMalaysia's official website, utilize the myCuaca mobile app, follow the department's social media channels, or call the dedicated hotline at 1-300-22-1638.
