Kuala Lampur:Masjid al-Fatah Sungai Setar Besar: The Social Welfare Department (JKM) is preparing for the Northeast Monsoon by ensuring that nearly 10,000 temporary relief centres across the nation are ready to be activated as necessary.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, the activation of these centres will be directed by the National Disaster Management Agency (NADMA) based on the needs of affected areas. Datuk Che Murad Sayang Ramjan, JKM's director-general, noted that not all centres are activated simultaneously each year, as typically only two, three, or four states are involved at any given time.
To support this effort, JKM is also focusing on logistical readiness. This includes having forward bases and disaster relief supply depots on standby and ensuring food supplies, such as retort ready-to-eat meals, are in good condition and not expired.
In addition to logistical preparations, community-level disaster preparedness training has been provided, introducing residents to the JKM MyIB application. This system allows villagers to pre-register, streamlining the process of evacuation and registration at relief centres, and facilitates the disbursement of Bantuan Wang Ihsan (BWI) through Bank Simpanan Nasional (BSN).
Che Murad Sayang also stated that the existing workforce is equipped to manage flood situations as per JKM's capacity. Furthermore, nearly 6,000 volunteers across the country can be mobilized to assist with the management of relief centres and disaster relief supply depots in the event of a large-scale disaster.
