Kuala lumpur: The implementation of smart lanes, enforcement of the overloaded lorry policy by the Road Transport Department (JPJ), and Malaysia's status under the Agreement on Reciprocal Trade (ART) are key topics at today's Dewan Rakyat sitting.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, the Order Paper on the official Parliament website indicates that Manndzri Nasib (BN-Tenggara) will inquire about the safety mechanisms, law enforcement, and technology used to ensure that smart lanes do not increase road accident risks during the Questions for Oral Answers session.
During the same session, Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong (BN-Ayer Hitam) will address the Transport Minister regarding the impact of the JPJ's overloaded lorry policy, which is set to be enforced from October 2025. Concerns focus on the policy's effects on the supply chain, logistics costs, and the cost of living, as well as the rationale behind its immediate implementation without a transition period.
Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin (PN-Larut) will seek clarification from the Investment, Trade, and Industry Minister about Malaysia's position concerning the ART. He will compare Malaysia's commitment to the agreement with that of Southeast Asian countries that have not signed or ratified it, questioning the government's justification for its continuation.
Additionally, Mohamad Shafizan Kepli (GPS-Batang Lupar) will question the Women, Family, and Community Development Minister about the criteria the Social Welfare Department uses in reassessing eligibility and tightening monthly welfare assistance provisions.
Following the oral question-and-answer session, the Dewan Rakyat will move on to the debate on the Motion of Thanks for the Royal Address by members of Parliament. The session is set to continue for 20 days, concluding on March 3.
