Singapore Deputy Prime Minister Visits Malaysia to Discuss Economic Ties

Kuala Lumpur:Singapore Deputy Prime Minister Gan Kim Yong arrived in Malaysia for a one-day working visit focused on strengthening economic ties and enhancing supply chain resilience between the two countries.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Gan, who is also Singapore's Trade and Industry Minister, was welcomed at Kuala Lumpur International Airport by R. Jaya Singam, Deputy Secretary-General (Investment and Management) of Malaysia's Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI).

During the visit, Gan is scheduled to meet with Malaysia's Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani and participate in a business luncheon with the Malaysia-Singapore Business Council in Kuala Lumpur. Additionally, he will co-chair the Third Annual Ministerial Dialogue between MITI and Singapore's Ministry of Trade and Industry and meet Economy Minister Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir in Putrajaya.

The dialogue will focus on enhancing bilateral cooperation in investment, trade, and the economy, specifically targeting supply chain resilience and the halal industry. An expected outcome of the dialogue is the adoption of the Terms of Reference for the Malaysia-Singapore Supply Chain Working Group. This group aims to bolster supply chain resilience, coordinate crisis responses, facilitate cross-border goods movement, and minimize disruptions to supply chains.

This visit also serves as an opportunity to explore new areas of cooperation, particularly in investment, trade, and the halal industry. In 2025, Singapore was Malaysia's second-largest trading partner globally and the largest among ASEAN member states, with bilateral trade valued at RM402.8 billion. During the same period, Singapore was Malaysia's largest source of foreign direct investment among ASEAN countries, totaling RM53.4 billion.
