Kuala lumpur: The Sepang International Circuit (SIC) is scheduled for a temporary closure starting September 7, to undergo refurbishment works in anticipation of the Formula One (F1) Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix. Youth and Sports Minister Dr. Mohammed Taufiq Johari announced that the Ministry of Youth and Sports (KBS) will oversee operations to ensure a seamless transition before and during the internationally recognized event.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Dr. Taufiq revealed that the closure will affect all external rentals of the facility while refurbishment efforts are underway. The comprehensive upgrade will focus on the track, seating, restrooms, and other essential facilities to enhance Malaysia's image on the global platform. The announcement was made during a presentation to the Kedah Elite Media Club (KMEK), where Dr. Taufiq emphasized the establishment of three committees-a main committee, a technical committee, and a sub-committee-to ensure the smooth conduct of the F1 race.

Dr. Taufiq further elaborated that the technical committee convenes weekly on Tuesdays, with their findings being presented to the Cabinet. He also mentioned that an agreement has been successfully signed between SIC and the Bahrain International Circuit, covering critical aspects such as ticket sales, parking, and logistics.

The F1 event, set to take place from October 2 to 4, is anticipated to bring significant economic benefits to Malaysia. Dr. Taufiq expressed confidence that the event will yield economic advantages for Malaysians and announced the upcoming launch of a volunteer recruitment drive for the F1 race.

In addition to F1 preparations, Dr. Taufiq addressed the ongoing haze situation and its impact on national athletes training for the Aichi-Nagoya 2026 Asian Games. He assured that the Ministry prioritizes the health of athletes and adheres to established guidelines in response to current haze conditions, without disrupting training schedules.

The haze situation showed some improvement with fewer areas recording unhealthy Air Pollutant Index (API) readings. In conjunction with these announcements, Dr. Taufiq presented a RM30,000 contribution to support KMEK activities, acknowledging the vital role of media practitioners in the state.
