Toyohashi:National karate exponent C. Shahmalarani achieved a significant victory for Malaysia by winning the women's below 50-kilogramme kumite event at the 2026 Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games, marking the country's third gold medal of the competition.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Shahmalarani triumphed over Hong Kong's Tsang Yee Ting through a judges' decision after their final bout ended without a score. This victory took place at the Toyohashi Gymnasium during Shahmalarani's second appearance at the Asian Games.

In the semi-finals, Shahmalarani overcame Uzbekistan's Gulshan Alimardanova with a 3-2 win. This victory was particularly satisfying for Shahmalarani, as she had previously been defeated by Alimardanova in the World Karate Championships final in Cairo, Egypt, last year.

Reflecting on her journey, Shahmalarani described the final match as a "roller-coaster ride" and expressed her happiness at the outcome. She emphasized the challenges faced on her path to the gold medal, including injuries and previous disappointing results, which led to self-doubt about her readiness for the Asian Games.

Shahmalarani began her campaign with an impressive 8-0 victory over Macau's Fong Man Wai in the first round and proceeded to defeat Bangladesh's Saiama Jaman 5-4 in the quarter-finals. Despite the pressure, Shahmalarani successfully delivered for her country, bringing pride to Malaysia with her outstanding performance.
