Kuala lumpur: The separation of powers between the Attorney General (AG) and the Public Prosecutor (PP) would ensure a prosecution process that is more independent and free from political influence, stated Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform), Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said. She emphasized that this move would also enhance the accountability of legal institutions, especially concerning the responsibility of the AG as the government's principal legal adviser.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Azalina highlighted the significance of the AG's role in terms of accountability during Cabinet meetings and in Parliament, underscoring it as the primary purpose of the separation. She expressed concerns about having to answer on behalf of the AG without the ability to extend beyond the provided responses during media interactions, particularly in the context of the 2025 UMNO General Assembly.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim mentioned earlier that the Bill to delineate the roles of the Attorney General and Public Prosecutor will be prioritized when Parliament reconvenes on January 19. Azalina also noted that discussions between the ministry and the Parliamentary Special Select Committee have indicated widespread support for the proposed legislation.
