Sepang International Circuit Poised for Potential F1 Return, Says MAM President

Sepang:Motorsports Associations of Malaysia (MAM) president Tan Sri Mokhzani Mahathir expressed confidence in the Sepang International Circuit's (SIC) capability and experience to host Formula 1 races again if Malaysia were to seize the opportunity in the future.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Mokhzani emphasized that while SIC is equipped to organize the event, the decision ultimately rests with the government. Assessing the economic impact of hosting the race is crucial in determining whether F1 will return to Malaysia on a permanent basis.

Mokhzani noted that the financial implications and broader economic benefits of hosting F1 should be carefully considered, as the event could significantly impact various sectors. He highlighted that visitors would not only attend the race but also explore Kuala Lumpur and other parts of Malaysia, benefiting the tourism industry.

While MAM is keen on the return of F1 to Malaysia, Mokhzani acknowledged that government support might be necessary due to the substantial financial resources required. He suggested a five-year '3+2' contract as an ideal arrangement, offering stability for all parties involved, including fans and the F1 management.

The strong turnout for this year's race, with 105,000 tickets reportedly sold, showcased the enthusiasm of Malaysian fans. Mokhzani attributed this to the opportunity for fans to make up for the absence of F1 since 2017. He was particularly surprised by the attendance even during preliminary events like practice sessions and qualifying rounds.

In July, it was confirmed that Malaysia will host the Gulf Air Bahrain GP from October 2 to 4, following an agreement between Formula 1, the International Automobile Federation (FIA), and the governments of Malaysia and Bahrain. This agreement ensures the Bahrain GP remains on the 2026 F1 calendar after being canceled earlier due to geopolitical tensions in West Asia. Malaysia previously hosted the Malaysian GP at SIC from 1999 to 2017 before its removal from the calendar.
