Selangor: The Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, emphasized that individuals who have strayed in life can find redemption through self-reflection, knowledge, and determination. This sentiment was illustrated by the achievements of Dr. Malik Yatam, the first individual to earn a PhD while serving a prison sentence.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Sultan Sharafuddin expressed satisfaction in granting Dr. Malik a pardon and noted that his positive development reassures the decision's merit. The Sultan made these remarks during the launch of Malik's book, 'PhD Dari Penjara,' at Pustaka Raja Tun Uda. The event was attended by prominent figures including the Tengku Permaisuri of Selangor, Tengku Permaisuri Norashikin, and the Raja Muda of Selangor, Tengku Amir Shah.

Sultan Sharafuddin praised Malik's endeavor to document his journey before, during, and after his imprisonment, hoping the book would inspire others to rebuild their lives. His Royal Highness also noted the positive public response to his previous meeting with Malik, which had inspired many.

The Sultan advised Malik to remain humble, uphold good conduct, and not to be swayed by temporary fame. He urged Malik to focus on knowledge, family, and community service rather than political pursuits, reinforcing the importance of using his second chance responsibly.

During the ceremony, Malik received acknowledgment from the Malaysia Book of Records as the 'First Malaysian Prisoner to Obtain a PhD from Prison,' and Open University Malaysia was recognized as the 'First University to Produce a PhD Graduate from Prison.'

Malik's remarkable journey began in 2001 when he was sentenced at 14 and culminated in his release on December 11, 2024, after 24 years in detention. His story of perseverance and transformation serves as a powerful example of the potential for change and redemption.
